About

Ama House: Peace and Women's Human Rights Museum grew from the Women's Rescue Foundation's work since 1992 with Taiwanese former "comfort women", including claims for redress from Japan. Opened in December 2016 in a building nearly a century old, it tells the life stories of 59 survivors ("ama", grandmothers), from records and objects the foundation kept, and looks at women's rights today.

From 1992 the foundation 婦女救援基金會 began investigating former Taiwanese "comfort women" and pursuing compensation claims against Japan. It supported and cared for the grandmothers (ama) in body and mind, and preserved audiovisual material, books and artefacts relating to the "comfort women". After 12 years of preparation, the museum's plaque was unveiled on 8 March 2016, and on 10 December it formally opened as Ama House: Peace and Women's Human Rights Museum. It records the life stories of 59 Taiwanese "comfort women" grandmothers, shaped by the suffering they went through. It is Taiwan's first multi-purpose social education centre based on the "comfort women" human rights movement, bringing together exhibitions on current women's rights issues and women's empowerment. The museum remembers this history and keeps following women's human rights today. It hopes to move beyond trauma, inspire the strength to go forward, and turn the scars of history into a foundation for peace, towards a future of respect, equality and non-violence.
