Taipei Fine Arts Museum

Opened in 1983, the museum (known in Chinese as Beimeiguan) was Taiwan's first modern art museum. Its core aim is to plan spaces and exhibitions with fresh thinking and to bring art into people's everyday lives. The building, designed by the architect Gao Erpan, has one basement level and three floors above ground, each with a clear curatorial role. The basement is a platform for emerging talent, used for shows by young artists, group shows and competition exhibitions, and it has a library and food and drink service. On 1F are the entrance lobby, exhibition walls six metres high and a spacious atrium rising three storeys; this is the main space for major Taiwanese and international exhibitions. On 2F are displays of the permanent collection, arranged by art history or by theme. The 3F galleries, with their bright light and double-cross layout, are used mainly for themed curated exhibitions. Besides exhibitions, the museum runs education programmes, holding seminars and weekend family activities from time to time to create chances for the public to engage with the museum and to bring art closer to daily life. Lighting has been added to the building and the outdoor sculptures. On the plaza stand Ju Ming's bronze sculpture 'Taiji Arch' and Li Zaiqian's red stainless-steel work 'Hong Bu Rang', which are lit up at night.
