Located in 228 Peace Memorial Park, this is the oldest museum in Taiwan. Its main building is itself a national monument, completed during the Japanese colonial period and combining Greek-style architecture with a Roman dome. It has a colonnade, fine carving and a large Roman-style dome above the entrance. In the high-ceilinged hall, sunlight falls through the dome's stained-glass skylight. The collections include specimens of plants and animals endemic to Taiwan, geological and mineral specimens, and ethnological collections, together presenting the island's biodiversity and cultural life. Among its prized items is the 'Yellow Tiger on a Blue Ground' flag, which bears witness to a key moment in Taiwan's modern history.
