In 1708 the ancestor of 郭元益 crossed the sea from Zhangzhou in Fujian to Taiwan and, with only a carrying pole, started out at Shilin Qiaotou, opening a new chapter in the history of traditional Taiwanese pastries. Over four generations the century-old shop kept renewing itself and became known as a "pastry family".

To preserve the heritage of Taiwanese pastry making, Mr Guo Yuanyi founded Taiwan's first pastry museum. It presents the century-long history of the "pastry family", the development of Taiwan's traditional pastry trade, and traditional Taiwanese customs for weddings, funerals and other occasions, to give people a deeper understanding of traditional Taiwanese pastries. The museum's Shilin branch opened in 2002, after the Yangmei branch in 2001. It stands on the original site of the century-old 郭元益 shop, on 4F and 5F of the 郭元益 company headquarters. Besides the exhibition area on a hundred years of Taiwanese pastry history and traditional customs, there is a baking room (快樂烘培屋) where visitors make pastries by hand, plus a family activity area and an outdoor family play area where adults and children can learn more about Taiwanese pastries.
