At the end of Yuanling Street near Taipei Station stands an installation of a giant black leather shoe: this is the leather shoe street. The area bounded by Zhonghua Road, Zhongxiao West Road, Zhongshan South Road and Aiguo West Road was the Qing-dynasty walled city of Taipei, and it has long been the political, economic and cultural centre of Taiwan.

Although the walls are gone, people still call it Chengzhong ('inside the city'). The Yuanling shopping street lies within the old city and has a long cultural history. Many shops here are long-established. As Taiwan's economy grew, Chengzhong Market and the Yuanling shopping street became a cluster of clothing and shoe shops, and Yuanling Street became known above all for its shoe shops. Many of the leather shoes are hand-stitched by veteran shoemakers, and many older people bring their broken shoes here to be mended. With social change and the rise of department stores, the street lost many customers.
