After photography arrived in Taiwan in the late Qing and early Japanese colonial period, cameras were long expensive and few people could afford them; a camera was a luxury that cost a house, or more than a thousand Taiwanese catties of white rice. Because there were many government offices and newspapers inside the old walled city of Taipei, and Taipei Railway Station nearby was convenient, camera shops gradually flourished on this custom. In 1958 a shop selling large film cameras by the German maker Rollei (羅來) opened opposite the Taipei Post Office, and camera shops such as 興福 and 宇宙 on Hankou Street and 榮美 and 永勝 on Bo'ai Road opened one after another. The shops here carry all kinds of brands and accessories. Times have changed: cameras are no longer expensive and almost everyone has a digital camera.
