Following the religious customs of home, the settlers bought statues to give form to their gods, and Section 1 of Xiyuan Road, beside Longshan Temple, became the starting point of statue carving in Taiwan. From the Guangzhou Street junction beside Longshan Temple to the Guilin Street junction, this short stretch of Xiyuan Road Section 1 is the best-known street for religious goods in Taiwan. Shops line both sides; one is a century-old business founded in 1895, and many others have been run by the same family for generations. Longshan Temple was a major reason statue carvers gathered on Xiyuan Road. As people became better off and more devout, temples multiplied and it became more common to bring deity statues home to worship, and together these drew the religious goods trade to this street. Besides statues, the shops sell altar tables, incense burner stands, altar lamps and other essential items.
