The house was built in 1935 as the residence of the head of the Communications Department of the Government-General's Transport Bureau in the Japanese era. After the war it became the residence of the Taiwan Provincial Government's Commissioner of Finance.

Kwoh-ting Li moved in in 1972, when he was Minister of Finance, and lived here until his death. Li was a key figure in Taiwan's economic development. From 1953, when he entered the field of finance and economics, until 1988, when he became a senior adviser to the president, he made major contributions to the development of Taiwan's industry, economy, public finance and high-tech sector, and he has been called a driving force of the Taiwan economic miracle and the godfather of technology. In 2003 the Taipei City Government designated the house a city monument and built a new exhibition hall beside it. The house opened to the public on 31 May 2010.
