About

National Taiwan University Hospital was founded in the Japanese colonial period. Earlier names were Taipei Hospital (臺北病院), the Taiwan Government-General Taipei Hospital and the hospital of the Taipei Imperial University medical faculty; after the war it was renamed National Taiwan University College of Medicine Hospital.

It has been the core of modern medicine in Taiwan. The building was designed by 近藤十郎. It is a two-storey Renaissance-style building of red brick and reinforced concrete. The plan is symmetrical, with a central corridor linking the clinics and wards. The lobby is grand and spacious and uses many Western building techniques, an example of modern Western-style architecture. At the time it was the largest and most modern hospital in South-East Asia.
