The temple dates from the Japanese era as an extension of the Linji school's Zhennanshan Huguo Temple, and its mountain gate and main hall are typical of Japanese Edo-period Buddhist temple architecture. It was founded in 1900 and completed in 1911 by the Japanese monk 得庵玄秀, who came to Taiwan early in the Japanese era at the invitation of the fourth Governor-General, Kodama Gentaro, to spread Buddhism.

The Linji school is a Buddhist school distinct from the Caodong school. The temple sits between hills and water, with the Keelung River winding nearby. Its grounds are large and well laid out, and originally included the mountain gate, a Dharma hall, the main hall and an abbot's quarters. The main hall is still well preserved: an all-timber building with a double-eaved hip-and-gable roof. The mountain gate is in Japanese Edo-period style. The large whetstone in front of the temple, the founder's tomb behind it and the stone Buddhist statues are also of historical value. Because of its historical, cultural and artistic value, it was designated a municipal monument in 1998 under the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act.
