About

The Gu family's 'Salt House' was built in 1910 by Gu Xianrong, father of Gu Zhenfu, the former chairman of the Straits Exchange Foundation. Because the family was then in the salt trade, the house has always been known as the Salt House.

It faced the wharves on the Tamsui River of the time; it was built on the riverbank for business, so that boats could moor right in front of the house. The family moved out in 1961, and in 1963 the Rongxing Kindergarten was set up on the site. The building imitates the Western late Renaissance style, with an arcade at the front, pale yellow facing tiles, arched windows and glazed ornamental balustrades. The elaborate medallion and relief decoration on the central front gable reflects the Western influence of the time, and the house typified the homes of the wealthy then. Inside, ceilings and staircases finely crafted from cypress are well preserved, and a wall bears the mark of the Dahe Trading Company run by Gu Xianrong.
