About

Commonly called the Dadaocheng Mazu Temple, it is dedicated to Tianshang Shengmu, popularly known as Mazu or Tianhou, the guardian goddess of seafaring. With Fazhu Temple and Xiahai City God Temple, it is counted as one of the three great temples of Dadaocheng.

The couplet on the main gate reads: 'The first gate opens on Guanyin Mountain rising in beauty; thousands of boats gather where the Kuifu waters shine', pointing to how the temple's site has changed over time. In 1866 (the fifth year of the Tongzhi reign), the temple was first built at what is now the junction of Xining North Road and Minsheng West Road. In front of it was a ferry wharf for trade, facing the Tamsui River as it flows from south to north, and Guanyin Mountain in Bali lay ahead to the right. In 1910 the Japanese authorities carried out urban redevelopment and demolished the temple. People of Tong'an origin raised funds to move it to its present site on Yanping North Road, rebuilding it with the original beams, columns and stone. The rebuilding was completed in 1914, and its original appearance survives.
