Zhishan Cultural and Ecological Garden

In 1896 anti-Japanese militia attacked Japanese teachers here, an event known as the Zhishanyan Incident, and after the war it was also a military site of the intelligence bureau. Under the city's cultural affairs department, the former ammunition depot has been converted into an exhibition hall, where visitors can learn about Zhishan's human history as well as enjoying nature on its boardwalks. The exhibition hall draws on Zhishan's natural ecology and geology. The ground floor has physical displays: a model of the rock layers showing the pattern and changes of each layer; a model of the whole area giving a bird's-eye view of Zhishanyan; and reconstructed pottery showing how the vessels used by early inhabitants developed from rough to refined. The ground floor also has many information panels, including a prehistoric archaeology corridor on the excavations and finds, and panels on animal and plant ecology, geology and wildlife that tell Zhishan's story. Upstairs is a multimedia classroom with a DIY room for drawing and making things, a screening room showing nature films from time to time, and small observation windows. There is also a small newsroom studio where children can try presenting the news. The hall is a first step in preserving Zhishanyan's culture; its most important value is to make visitors value and care for this land.
