Treasure Hill

In 2004 Treasure Hill was registered as a historic building and preserved as a revitalised settlement. The artist village opened in 2010. Based on the idea of 'settlement symbiosis', it introduced programmes including Baozang Jiayuan (Treasure Home), an artist residency programme and a youth hostel, preserving Treasure Hill by combining art and living. The village links the settlement's residents with its resident artists. It has studios where artists from Taiwan and abroad live and work during residencies, as well as rehearsal rooms, exhibition rooms and outdoor performance spaces. Seen from the riverside green below the settlement, the broken walls stretch across the slope like a cross-section of history, offering clues to Treasure Hill's past and its layered spatial structure. The Gelou (Attic) youth hostel, with seven rooms, opened in April 2014. It is meant as a way into the settlement, showing the marks of time through its spaces and letting guests experience the settlement as a lived-in place, combining the spirit of the natural setting with that of human dwelling. Near the waterworks below Fuhe Bridge, Treasure Hill is a historic settlement with a distinctive landscape of winding lanes and steps that rise and fall with the slope, the houses scattered over the surrounding hillside. A policy of preservation through revitalisation brought in artists and creative studios and opened this hillside settlement to the public. Treasure Hill also has a hillside Buddhist temple, two to three hundred years old, dedicated to Guanyin, where people pray for safety. A riverside cycle path runs from Xindian all the way to the Tamsui River.
