Taipei Post Office

In the Japanese colonial period, as the railway network was built, the station grew in importance, and because postal work was closely tied to the station, the post office moved to its present site. It was first a Japanese-style wooden building, but this burned down and was rebuilt in 1929 as a reinforced concrete building. After the end of Japanese rule, with the growth of postal services and organisational changes, it became the state-owned Chunghwa Post Co., Ltd. Taipei Post Office on 1 January 2003, and was renamed Taiwan Post Co., Ltd. Taipei Post Office on 9 February 2007. The post office is a large four-storey building with simple decoration and clean lines. The entrance porch projects forward in a rounded arch, and the facade has four pairs of round classical columns and pediment decoration. Paired columns set within the window openings divide the windows, and the facade is split into three bays, two large and one small. The main hall inside rises two storeys, and the structure is simplified, while the classical carving on the columns and the hall ceiling is fine and elegant. Because it stands beside the North Gate, it is also known as the North Gate Post Office.
