Kishu An

The historic Kishu An building was a Japanese-style restaurant in the Japanese colonial period and after the war became housing for the families of civil servants and teachers. It lies in Chengnan (south of the city), at the heart of an area that reaches out to Tong'an Street, Xiamen Street, Jinmen Street and Guling Street, and as far as the National Taiwan Normal University and National Taiwan University areas, which played a key part in the history of Taiwan's post-war literature. The area was the birthplace of the Blue Star Poetry Society and of magazines such as Wenxue Zazhi (Literary Magazine), Xiandai Wenxue (Modern Literature), Caoyuan and Daxue; literary bodies such as the Chinese Literature and Art Association and the Mandarin Daily News, publishers such as Chunwenxue, Hongfan, Erya and Yuanliu, and writers including Lin Haiyin, Lin Liang, Yu Guangzhong, Wang Wenxing and Yin Di all pursued their literary ideals here. The aim is to use Kishu An and its new building as the centre and starting point for bringing this literary history and its treasures back to light.
