He also gave equal weight to libraries and museums, which led to the proposal for a museum. Preparations took eight years. The museum began as the Chinese Cultural Relics Display Hall, set up in Dacheng Hall in 1963. In 1965 it moved to Daren Hall and became the Cultural Relics Museum, and in 1969 it was renamed the International Chinese Studies Materials Exhibition Hall. To keep up with these changes it was expanded three times. For day-to-day work such as collecting and caring for objects, a museum was first set up inside the library, the two together being called the Library and Museum. Later a museum section was set up within the Chinese Academy to take charge of this work. In 1971 the Hwa Kang Museum was formally established on floor 6 of Dayi Hall, the country's first comprehensive university museum. The museum supports teaching and provides resources for general education, and also serves public education and the local community. From 1985 the board chairman, Dr Zhang Jinghu, planned new premises for the museum, designed together with the library and information centre as the Xiaofeng Memorial Hall. Construction was completed at the end of 1998, and the building opened on 1 March 1999, keeping the name Hwa Kang Museum. The museum's work falls into three areas: collections, exhibitions and educational outreach. Through the efforts of successive directors (Pan Weihe, Zhao Zhenji, Chen Guoning, Chen Mingxiang, Wu Ruixiu, Ji Ruoxin and Liu Meiqin) and their staff, it has grown considerably.
