Guo Yimei Bookshop

The Guo family made its fortune in Dadaocheng a hundred years ago; over the years, by the third generation, the whole family had left Dadaocheng. Guo Zhongxing of the third generation went into publishing, and after his success he leased back his grandfather's first family home in 2022 and opened the bookshop under the name of the original trading house. Founded during the pandemic, the bookshop puts books first and believes in their purity and in the value of reading, and so holds a very large number of books. Its mission is to connect with the community and promote reading. In Dadaocheng it works with the Xiahai City God Temple and local businesses on walking tours of Dadaocheng and talks on the area's history. It also works with primary schools in Taipei and New Taipei, inviting pupils to visit and giving each a book of their own choice, to introduce children to reading in a bookshop. It also works widely with publishers, galleries, artists and creators to hold concerts, painting and photography exhibitions, book talks, exhibitions of creative work, themed exhibitions and night tours, which have made it a local arts centre. The bookshop hopes to carry the century-old history of the trading house forward and become a bookshop for the next hundred years. As history and culture are passed on and the ways people read change, it sees a need for meaningful continuity and for connecting books with people. Its mission is to be a cultural base that draws readers interested in history, art, culture, knowledge and beauty, and to invite the next generation to the bookshop so that they absorb its cultural atmosphere and come to enjoy reading.
