When the winter cherry (寒櫻) first opens, its flowers are a pale pinkish white; they then turn pink and later deep red. Each bud holds three or four flowers, and the buds grow close together, so in full bloom whole branches are covered in soft pink flowers.

Cherry blossom viewing in northern Taiwan almost always begins with the cherries of Pingjing Street on Yangmingshan. In January and February, Taiwan cherries bloom along the road into Yangmingshan. The trees stand in quiet lanes of Yangmingshan, and in Pingdeng Village there are many leisure farms with coffee and refreshments, where you can see crops growing and eat farm-style food. Cherry varieties on Yangmingshan include Taiwan cherry (緋寒櫻, also called 山櫻花), double-flowered Taiwan cherry (八重櫻), Yoshino cherry, Showa cherry and Oshima cherry.
