With this aim, the Japanese learned from the West and built many European Baroque-style buildings in Taiwan. The Presidential Office Building was the Office of the Governor-General in the Japanese era and was completed in 1919. The Governor-General's office faced east, looking over the whole of Taipei as far as Sishoushan (the Four Beasts Mountains). Thirteen governors-general worked here, starting with the seventh.
